What Risks Are You Taking?
Securely Using Your Phone:
Don’t install applications from unknown sources such as an unofficial app store.
Don’t use sensitive services like Internet banking when your device is connected to open WiFi (e.g. in cafés).
Don’t allow a scanned QR code or NFC tag to dial a number, go to a web link or send an SMS unless you know that the number or website is legitimate.
Turn off features such as WiFi, NFC, Bluetooth and location services when you are not using them.
Always review permissions before installing an application and be wary of apps that want to access sensitive features.
Always check a web link to be sure it is going to where you expect it to, if in doubt, don’t click.
General Guidelines
Don’t reply to spam SMS messages, even with STOP.
Don’t root or jailbreak your phone.
Don’t buy counterfeit phones or phones over the web from other people.
Don’t let your child play with your work phone.
Check your phone bill regularly for unusual charges.
Check the security settings on your Apps after installation
Ensure you make the most of your phone’s in-built security features.
Follow the rules laid out by your organization’s mobile device usage policy, they’re there for a reason.
Personal Safety
Don’t use your mobile phone while driving – it is illegal and nothing is so urgent to cause an accident.
Don’t increase your personal risk by putting up a fight to someone snatching your phone. Let them take it.
Be careful when texting or listening to music on your phone when walking, as your senses are impaired.
Be careful when using your phone if you feel unsafe, especially at night where the screen or sound could draw unwanted attention.
Lost or Stolen Devices
Don’t leave your phone in places such as café tables, or a back pocket. Make sure that if it is in a bag, it is zipped up & secured and not left unattended.
Don’t use your phone at obvious places for theft, such as tube station exits.
Keep your phone out of sight where possible.
Minimize any personal / sensitive information stored on your device.
Backup your phone’s data on a regular basis, but be careful about using “cloud” services for sensitive information.
Learn how to remotely lock and wipe your device. If you need an application to do it, download it now rather than regret not doing it later.
Make use of your device’s PIN lock, screen timeout and password functions.
